The Truth About Chon-Ji?!

harriettolley1971

As many of you may know, chon-ji is the first pattern that you learn in Taekwon-do. We have always taught the meaning to be heaven and earth which is still correct. We have always said that the first half represents the Earth as the low blocks point down, towards the Earth, and that the second half represents heaven as the middle block points up towards heaven.

However, this may not be entirely true...

After doing some research and reading on the pattern chon-ji, I have come to learn that instead the first half of the pattern represents heaven and the second half represents Earth. According to Stuart Anslow in the book 'From Creation to Unification', the low block in the first half is to represent being in heaven and pointing down to Earth. In the same way, the second half represents Earth, as the middle block is pointing up towards heaven.

Now, we don't know how trustworthy this information is but I find it is great to get different viewpoints and ideas about everything as it is a great way to learn. For now, I'd just stick with the meaning we've been taught and have known since we started, but also do some reading into your patterns, you may find out something new!
